Ending on a high note with Machiavelli

The first term of the Kenilworth Community Course ended on Friday the 10th of March with a lively session on Machiavelli. It was a good opportunity to think about what the relationship is between power and virtue, and whether or not we should expect our politicians to observe the same rules as the rest of us. Some brought in an article from last week’s Saturday Guardian that had to do with exactly this topic. (For the article by Erica Benner, see here.) Machiavelli certainly offers a contrast with the previous week’s session on Erasmus’ The Education of a Christian Prince, which presents the person in power in a rather idealistic way, and as someone who combines in himself all of the virtues!
